Swaranjali -Indian Classical Music in Bombay

Last evening I took my parents to an excellent concert at the Nehru Centre in Bombay. Shubha Mudgal and Hariprasad Chaurasia were the performers of the evening. They are both trained under the North Indian style of music. Shubha Mudgal is an excellent vocalist, this is the first time I have gone for her live performance and her range and control of her voice blew me away. I don't really understand or know the intricate details of what she was trying to convey. Nonetheless one can just enjoy sweet melody produced by her voice alone. She was followed by Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, who is an excellent flutist, I have been to his performances before and he didn't disappoint this time either. He is one of the few who engages the audience and makes the exchange humourous. He was accompanied by two other flutists and when they played you couldn't tell them apart. Only seeing them there made one believe that there are three flutes being played.
All in all it was enjoyable evening and I was glad I could take my parents out to the show. For I know on their own they never would go.
